Why We Need You!
$4.41 per child per week!
$6.16 per child per long weekend!
Our program funds extra snacks and meals for these students. Typically for longer breaks from school, our committee will send out a sign up genius with what we need to make sure all of our children have food and snacks.
We have a chair who is dedicated to making sure these packages are put together weekly. Currently we have over 100 children in need. Monetary donations are easier for us as it allows us to buy in bulk. Each week, the chair and her committee spend hours purchasing and putting together packages for the weekend for children. In addition to donations, we always encourage volunteers to come help! There is nothing more that the PTO wants than to make sure every child in our school has what they need once they leave school. Community support is encouraged and very appreciated! If we don't meet our fundraising goals, the PTO jumps in financially to make sure no child goes hungry.
Donation options are below. You have the option to do a one time donation, reoccurring donation monthly, or a yearly amount. Pass this on to family and friends who want to help our kids. Reoccurring donations are a huge help - we know what to expect each month and a small amount each month goes a long way in this program. We encourage you all to share this information.
Make a difference by asking for hunger-free weekends instead of personal gifts for your birthday. Blessings in a Backpack is a great way to show our children how to give back. Instead of a birthday gift from someone, ask them to donate to this wonderful cause in their name. Teaching the positive effect we can have on giving is a great life lesson for all! Facebook has charities you can set up in lieu of birthday gifts and is a great way to give back to our community!

Blessings in a Backpack is a national program that Palencia Elementary School began participating in in 2016. Every school-aged child in America deserves to have the nourishment needed to learn and grow. As a leader in the movement to end childhood hunger, Blessings in a Backpack strives to ensure children do not go hungry on the weekends.
At Blessings in a Backpack, we ensure that kids nationwide have full bellies over the weekend by sending them home on Fridays with backpacks full of satisfying and nutritional food.

In 2016, Palencia launched the Blessings in a Backpack program with the help of numerous volunteers and community donations. We began with 15 children and have now grown to over 65 children who we provide food for every weekend. Each week of the school year, our volunteer team purchases food & packs it into bags, which are then given to the school staff for distribution to our qualified students in a confidential manner.
Donations to the program have helped us provide over 2,200 hunger free weekends to Palencia Elementary students last year! Together we are helping to address the 65 hour weekend nutrition gap.

We would love for our community to help us in providing to our qualifying PES students. It costs approximately $130 / year / student to provide these students with their Blessings in a Backpack. You can help by sponsoring a child for the year or any portion of the year you are able to. The donations raised will then be put into a Blessings in a Backpack fund that our volunteer team will use to purchase food for the program. Despite the national average being $130 /per child per year, our PES PTO supplements what is given to each child.

You can sponsor in a number of ways. You can cover the cost of a child's backpack for a whole year, half year or month OR you can provide a flat rate donation of any amount you choose (suggested amounts below). You can also choose to make your donation recur monthly or annually.
Suggested amounts for Flat Rate Custom Donations: $200, $150, $100, $75, $50, $25, $10
